ASTM Sets Standards for Forgings in Transmission Poles

Guidelines allow users, producers of bases to choose among methods of production ASTM A1090/A1090M available Comments welcome on application, use

Noting the unrecognized importance of the steel bases for power transmission poles, ASTM International issued new production guidelines for forgings used to fabricate those parts. ASTM A1090/A1090M, Specification for Forged Rings and Hollows Produced from Steels with Atmospheric Corrosion Resistance provides guidance for forging steel components of those bases.

ASTM develops and maintains systems of standards and related products and services. It meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for developing international standards, and its standards are accepted and used in R&D, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions.

ASTM A1090/A1090M was developed by Subcommittee A01.06 on Steel Forgings and Billets, part of ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys.

Steel bases of power transmission poles are critical to the structure, but often unnoticed as part of an electrical infrastructure. Proper performance of such bases helps to ensure uninterrupted power to consumers.

“ASTM A1090/A1090M now gives users and producers of bases multiple methods of production from which to choose,” stated Patrick Nowak, plant metallurgist at Scot Forge, and an ASTM member. “In practice, this increases the diversity of suppliers of raw material, which leads to reductions in cost and lead time.”

Nowak added that primary users of ASTM A1090/A1090M will be manufacturers of bases for power transmission poles.

Additionally, the standard will be used by companies supplying power through transmission poles, as well as local, state and federal regulatory agencies involved in approving and monitoring electrical infrastructure projects.

All interested parties are invited to comment on their use of ASTM A1090, and to join in the standards developing activities of A01.

The new standard is available for purchase from ASTM. Visit www.astm.org or contact ASTM Customer Relations (tel. 877-909-ASTM; [email protected] .)
