Sypris Plans to Move Production from Ohio to North Carolina

Plant in Morganton, NC, has proven to be more efficient.

Sypris Technologies, Inc. has announced it will expand its manufacturing facility in Morganton, NC and add 203 jobs by the end of 2013. The subsidiary of Louisville, Ky.-based Sypris Solutions Inc. plans to invest $25.4 million to expand the Morganton plant and add 203 jobs by the end of 2013. The plant now employs 166.

The project will result in the closing of its commercial trailer components plant in Kenton, OH and a forging operation in Marion, OH, during 2009. The company is a significant supplier of forged and machined drive train components for the light, medium and heavy-duty truck markets in North America

Company officials expect the consolidation of production in Morganton to result in significant savings. It has consistently been one of the most efficient manufacturing centers for Sypris over the past several years, according to a news release.

The company recently told the state of Ohio it will begin phased layoffs off 232 workers at the Kenton plant until it closes in May. A total of 82 workers will lose their jobs in Marion.

Production in North Carolina is expected to start during the first half of 2009.

“This is a pivotal period for all companies in the automotive industry. Consolidating certain areas of our operations under one roof in Morganton will improve our competitiveness and the Morganton facility will become a strategic hub for our North American operations,” said Sergio de Carvalho, president of Sypris Technologies. “By making a significant investment in our production capacity, flexibility, and capabilities we will be better positioned to support the needs of our customers.”
