The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently certified Standard Forged Products LLC as a “star site,” the agency’s highest honor for employers participating in its Voluntary Protection Programs. "Standard Forged deserves to be recognized for its exemplary effort to maintain a safe and healthy work environment for employees," stated OSHA deputy regional administrator Edward Selker.
The Standard Forged Products organization dates its origins to 1795, when Freedom Forge was established to produce iron bars and rods. The McKees Rocks, PA, company started producing railcar wheels and axles in 1895.
Today, Standard Forged Products produces railcar axles and circular forgings, and machines, finishes, and refurbishes axles. Among its production systems are a 10,000-ton forging press and a vertical wheel rolling mill.
Standard’s products and services support companies in the transportation, construction, energy, and general manufacturing sectors.
OSHA's recognition programs include the VPP for employers and employees that have implemented exemplary workplace safety and health management systems. In the VPP, management, labor and OSHA work cooperatively and proactively to prevent injuries, illnesses and workplace hazards. As part of attaining VPP status, employers must demonstrate management commitment to the safety and health of their employees, and actively involve employees in the safety and health management system.
