Stages of Progress
Standard Forged Products has operated the Snyder three-stage lathe machining line to finish rail and locomotive axles since the 1960s.
In addition to remanufacturing the three lathes, Euro Machinery Specialists re-engineered and provided an entirely new overhead gantry workpiece shuttle system to manage the workpiece handling between process stages.
The line's first stage is a roughing lathe, for left and right journal section machining. Then, the workpieces are transferred in sequence to the second stage, for center-section roughing, and then the third stage, for finish cuts.
Old-Fashioned Team Effort
"This was a total team effort between Siemens, Standard Forged Products, and our company," according to Euro Machine Specialists Karl Engelke. "The result was a better-than-new production line for our customer, which came about through the use of new modern motion control and CNC technologies, diverse talents cooperating together and a good deal of old-fashioned American ingenuity.”
